Elbridge ‘Al’ H. Curtis, 94, of Merrill, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Al was born January 25, 1929, in Wisconsin, son of the late Hilton and Helen (Bull) Curtis. He married Marlene Thompson on April 23, 1953, in Poynette. She preceded him in death on December 2, 2020. Al was a teacher and taught at Merrill High School for many years. He was the director of the Merrill School Forest, where he was famous for making green pancakes. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Al was a conservationist, environmentalist, and a social activist. He publicly advocated for Pine Crest Nursing Home and was a published author. Al enjoyed hunting in Vilas County, fishing in Lake Superior, trapping, camping, and traveling, especially to Alaska.
Al is survived by his sons, Dennis Curtis of Merrill and Doug Curtis of Gleason; grandchildren, Andrew Curtis of Medford and Sarah Matthias of Merrill; great grandchildren, Skyler, Isabell, Mackenzie, and Brady; sister, Eleanor Walters; and brother, Hugh Curtis. Al was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Curtis; and parents, Hilton and Helen Curtis.
The funeral service for Al will be at 4:00 PM Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Rev. Jess Wakefield will officiate. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Rocky Run Cemetery, Rio, Wisconsin.
